Design Brief
With the introduction of the acclaimed
DAC X and DAC XP D/A converters, Cyrus moved into a new
league for replay of digital sources by
offering 192kHz up-sampling, true 192kHz DACs and full
differential modes of operation. Now,
the long awaited CD Xt is introduced to complement the DAC
XP and other established ‘X’ series components
as a high-end ‘digital optimised’ CD source.
Partnered with a DAC XP and a pair of
PSX-R power supplies, this four box combination reestablishes
Cyrus with a high-end system to succeed
the reputation of the revered
Discmaster/Dacmaster/PSX-R/PSX-R system.
Featuring improvements to the disc-reading
servo circuit, a power supply optimised for ‘digital only’
processing and the facility to connect
a PSX-R power supply, the CD Xt more than justifies its ‘X’
series status.
• Clock stability is a key element in
the signal processing chain in a player of this standard. The
digital engineering of the CD Xt therefore
includes a remote re-clocking circuit with closetolerance
crystal VCO located at the threshold of
the signal drive circuit to maximise jitter
rejection.
• Packed into the stylish, compact chassis
of the CD Xt is a high quality toroidal power transformer.
The transformer has two entirely separate
secondary windings with one dedicated to feeding the
digital electronics and the other supplying
a completely separate feed to the current hungry motors.
In true Cyrus style the PSX-R power supply
may also be connected to further refine the power
supply system and take over power supply
to the motors.
• Cyrus products have always delivered
sonic excellence hand-in-hand with state-of-the-art technical
performance. The CD Xt is no exception
and Cyrus are justifiably proud of the measured
performance of the ‘X’ series transport
and DAC combination. A CD Xt partnered with a DAC X or
DAC XP will deliver ruler-flat linearity
performance, vanishingly low background noise and
superb jitter rejection, out-performing
most two box players in their class.
• A natural upgrade path for the CD Xt
owner is the acquisition of an optional PSX-R external DC
Power supply. This unique and intelligent
component allows the CD Xt to tap into a massive
reserve of highly regulated DC energy
source. Providing a completely separate power feed for the
high current demands of the mechanism
motors, the PSX-R effectively removes the dynamically
changing load of the motors from the internal
power transformer.
• The unique MC-Bus connectivity of the
CD Xt is in keeping with the total system approach of the
Cyrus range of products. This facility
enhances ergonomic operation of the unit in a system
context. Total automation of the test,
alignment and calibration of the CD Xt is facilitated via the
MC-Bus during its manufacturing process,
eliminating potential human error.
• With an additional interface connected
to the MC-Bus communication port and special comms
software installed, the CD Xt becomes
‘RS232 compatible’ enabling bi-directional communication
to one of the Industry Standard system
controllers of Home Automation systems.
• The quality lightweight die-cast enclosure
of the CD Xt has a myriad of advantages both
electrically and mechanically. The non-resonant
nature of the alloy minimises microphonic effects,
while its non-ferrous composition provides
an effective shield from external electro-magnetic
disturbances. This also eliminates coupling
of the power transformer stray magnetic fields to the
sensitive audio circuitry.

Design Brief
As a company with an established reputation for making some of the finest audiophile CD players, the challenge for Cyrus was to design a disc player with sonic performance to equal a Cyrus CD player and DVD video performance to match. The DVD7 addresses this brief, delivering stunning picture quality and superb CD playing performance. A complete Cyrus Home Theatre system with a DVD7 source, a Cyrus digital surround sound decoder, a set of Cyrus power amplifiers, a set of Cyrus speakers and a quality video monitor will re-create a breathtaking cinema experience in the home and deliver audio performance which will satisfy the most discerning of Cyrus audiophiles.
The video output signals from the DVD7 originate from a high resolution video encoder and are buffered through high speed fully discrete analogue amplifier stages for all format outputs. High quality linear power supply regulators and careful application of circuit decoupling ensure that the amplifiers maintain good transient performance and exhibit a low noise floor.
At the heart of any DVD player, the DVD decoding engine is responsible for accurately recovering the digital data stream from the disc and decoding this into video and audio information. The DVD7 employs one of the latest generation of high speed decoders and includes within a single environment the major signal processing functions of MPEG decoding, video encoding (multiple formats), OSD display and audio decoding. This central processing engine also benefits from a single, high accuracy master clock for all functions.
Dual domain topology. The DVD7 is constructed in two physically separate domains to isolate the sensitive analogue video and audio signals from the high speed digital disc reading and decoding functions. Separate power supplies are configured for the two domains to eliminate noise coupling which can occur in players with single domain construction and common power supplies.
Based on the 24 bit technology developed for the acclaimed CD7, the DVD7s audio DAC features an integrated stereo filter DAC running at 8 times base sample rate. This state of the art converter has excellent technical performance in all areas. The exceptional dynamic range performance ensures faithful reproduction of essential detail which can be lost from recordings.
A specially developed wide bandwidth, low distortion analogue output stage minimises phase shift at frequency extremes and provides clean imaging with superb transient response.
A traditionally engineered linear power supply with low-noise toroidal power transformer provides the power source for the circuitry of the DVD7. 12 regulated power supplies smooth the power to ensure that each stage within the DVD7 is supplied independantly with clean power, reducing the effects of power supply distortion on the audio and video signals.
Extensive inter-stage power supply decoupling together with star-earthing techniques isolate the player’s sensitive audio and video stages from its high-speed digital circuits.
A highly tuned, self-centring suspension isolates the sensitive disc reading mechanism from the environment. This minimises vibration induced disc reading errors which often introduce inaccuracies in the data retrieved from the disc.
The Q7 DAC module upgrade may be fitted internally to further improve the resolution and bandwidth of the DVD7 audio stages. The Q7 features twin mono DACs with a differential analogue post-filter circuit.
A further upgrade path for the DVD7 owner is an optional PSX-R external DC Power supply. This unique intelligent component allows the DVD7 to tap into its massive reserve of highly regulated DC energy.Separating analogue from digital supplies, the PSX-R eliminates mains borne and charging spike imprints on the sensitive analogue sections of the DVD7.The result is greatly improved musical timing, image depth and sweetness.
The unique MC-Bus connectivity of the DVD7 is in keeping with the total system approach of the Cyrus range. MC-Bus enhances ergonomic operation of the unit in a system context. It also acts as a powerful tool to enable automation of test, alignment and calibration of the DVD7 during manufacture, hugely reducing potential human error.
The quality lightweight die-cast enclosure of Cyrus DVD7 has a myriad of advantages both electrically and mechanically. The non-resonant nature of the alloy minimises microphonics and its non-ferrous composition provides an efficient electro-magnetic shield.
